Localewright: Translation Accuracy and Machine Translation Disclaimer
What you get is a machine-translation draft: review it before you ship it
Localewright produces a machine-translation draft, not a finished, reviewed translation. It is meant to save you the first pass. A fluent speaker of the target language should read and correct every string before the file goes into a product.
Localewright translates your localization files with automated machine translation. It does not use human translators or reviewers. Machine translation is useful for a first pass, but it can be wrong in ways that are hard to spot, even when the result reads fluently.
Quality differs a lot by language
The free engine is a general multilingual model, not a specialist system. In our own spot checks it was usable for German, rough for Arabic, and weak for Japanese, where some strings come back partly or fully in English. Other languages have not been checked; assume quality is lower for less common languages and for short, context-free strings. We make no claim that any language reaches a given standard.
Best-effort languages (Japanese, Chinese, Thai and similar)
For Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Lao, Khmer and Burmese the free engine can only translate one string at a time and is more likely to drop punctuation, leave text in English or lose placeholders. We label this output "best-effort draft, review before shipping" and do not offer these languages on the free tier; they are available only with a paid purchase. A paid purchase does not change the quality: have a fluent speaker review every string.
What we do to help you review
- Possibly-untranslated list and review report. After each translation we flag strings that came back identical to the source, or that are mostly Latin letters in a language written in another script (for example Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Korean). The flags appear on the page and in a downloadable review report. This is a rough automatic check: it can flag brand names and loanwords, and it can miss a string that is only partly translated. It does not measure quality.
- Terminal punctuation. If your source string ended in punctuation such as
!,?,.or…and the engine dropped it, we put an equivalent mark back (for example the full-width!or。for Japanese and Chinese). This is also automatic and can be wrong for a given style guide. - Placeholders and markup are checked as described below.
What can go wrong
- Mistakes of meaning: wrong word sense, missed negation, wrong numbers, dates or units, dropped or added text.
- Tone and fit: the wrong level of formality, awkward or unnatural phrasing, text that is too long for your user interface, or text that is culturally inappropriate or offensive.
- Terminology: product names, brand terms and technical terms may be translated when they should not be, or inconsistently.
- Context: the engine sees short strings without your app's screens, so ambiguous strings (for example "Post", "Open", "Set") are often translated incorrectly.
- Lower-resource languages: quality varies a lot by language. The free engine (a general multilingual model, Meta's M2M-100 as served by Cloudflare Workers AI) is weaker than specialist engines, particularly for less common languages.
- Placeholders and markup: Localewright protects placeholders (such as {name}, %s, %1$d), ICU plural syntax and markup, and checks its output. It falls back to your original text for any string where it cannot be sure it kept them intact, and reports that as a warning. These checks reduce the risk; they cannot guarantee it. Always run your own build and tests on the output.
Your responsibility
Have a fluent speaker review the output before you ship it. Do not rely on Localewright for legal, medical, safety, financial, regulatory, contractual or other high-stakes text, or for text where an error could cause harm. You are responsible for how you use the translations.
No warranty, no liability for accuracy
Quietcog gives no warranty that any translation is accurate, complete, appropriate or fit for a purpose, and, to the extent permitted by law, is not liable for losses arising from translation content or errors. See sections 9 and 10 of the Terms.
Pauses
We may pause translation and checkout at any time, for example when the free engine's daily capacity is used up or for maintenance. A pause does not cancel a payment that was already verified; see the Terms.
Bring-your-own-key engines (currently switched off)
Bringing your own DeepL key is not offered right now. If it is switched on again and you supply your own DeepL API key, the text is sent to DeepL with your key, and DeepL's own terms, data handling, quotas and charges apply to you. We do not store or log your key. Localewright is not affiliated with or endorsed by DeepL. DeepL's output is also machine translation and this disclaimer applies to it equally.
Short form (for the upload page)
This is a machine-translation draft: review it before you ship it. Output is generated automatically and may contain errors, leave some text untranslated, and read poorly in some languages (Japanese, Chinese and Arabic are the weakest; Japanese and Chinese are labelled best-effort draft, review before shipping, and are paid-only). Do not use it for legal, medical or safety-critical text. Quietcog gives no warranty of accuracy and is not liable for translation content. Files are processed in memory and not kept.
